A stamp of approval for the Negro Leagues!
I doubt Rush Limbaugh will become a collector, but there’s a new stamp that has hit the market, and it’s long overdue. Early Negro Leagues Players are being honored in a set of stamps that was recently released by the U.S. Postal Service. Players such as Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and ”Cool Papa” Bell were among 2600 pioneers who competed in the Negro Leagues. These trailblazers helped pave the way for Jackie Robinson to break the major league baseball color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Gregory D. Baker, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, says, ‘‘through their unsung civic endeavors, the Negro Leagues and their players raised awareness and started a conversation about the standards of social justice in our country for all people regardless of race or gender.” In 1920, a black athlete named Rube Foster organized the Negro National League, the first long-lasting professional league for African-American ballplayers. Mr. Foster was a businessman who had a vision. Today, Mr. Foster’s vision impacts every man and woman in this country. For that, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Rube Foster. The Negro Leagues and most of their stars are long gone, but thank you U.S. Postal Service for your help in preserving the memory of something so important in our country’s history.
