U. of Alabama football coach Nick Saban believes unscrupulous agents, or as he calls them, pimps, are exploiting players. Saban is correct. The agents are trying to hustle the kids, but Saban and other college coaches are also  pimps because what they’re selling these kids is an opportunity to be exploited. Sure the student-athlete gets a free ride, but he’s being taken for a ride once he arrives on campus.  I understand that the education and room and board are free, which is always a great price, however, these kids are being abused financially by the system and verbally by the coaches. The Nick Saban’s of the world would lose their job in a heartbeat if they displayed this verbally abusive behavior in a corporate environment. I understand athletes need to be motivated. But they don’t need to be verbally harassed. Mr. Coach, try using your harsh words on your boss and we’ll see how long it takes for HR to throw you out of the building. Saban is fearful that an unscrupulous agent will bring down his program. All it takes is for one Reggie Bush to sink an entire football team, athlete department, and school. The answer is, we should hold the student athlete and the unscrupulous agent accountable for their behavior in a manner that doesn’t affect the innocent parties. Why should an innocent starting wide receiver have to pay for a teammates selfish act?  So, let’s do this, you get caught accepting money, you and the agent both are prosecuted by the law.  But, we still have the exploitation problem. Since we’re making it very difficult for the student athlete to accept money under the table, we have to turn the table and give the athlete a piece of the financial pie. Not that Saban hasn’t earned his four million dollar per year salary, his country club membership, two cars, a luxury box at Bryant-Denny Stadium and up to 25 hours of yearly flight time for personal travel in a noncommercial plane, because he has. But the players who make it possible for Saban to live the American Dream need to stop being treated like prostitutes.
