Little Guys with Big Personalities
Vic Darchinyan and Jorge Arce are not big men,, they fight in the superflyweight division. But, they have personalities that are a lot bigger. They have both been talking a good game about what they would do to the other man if they ever got in the ring together. We will find out who has been right on Saturday, Feb. 7th when they do meet at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
A large television audience will be watching at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time on Showtime, and I’ll have the pleasure of announcing at ringside for that telecast. It will, in fact, usher in my 5th year of sportscasting at Showtime. This promises to be as entertaining in the ring as it has been outside it. They will show their flamboyant personalities as well as their well known aggression and power. Darchinyan and Arce have combined for 64 knockout wins and both have announced they will win this one by knockout.
Darchinyan recently sparred with a young lady who is an amateur boxer and declared that she is better than Arce. Darchinyan has beaten all the Mexican fighters he has faced and says they were all true warriors, unlike Jorge. For Arce’s part he says that Darchinyan is overrated and he will teach him a lesson on Saturday. This bravado is not something manufactured by these men, it’s part of the fabric of who they are. That, plus their boxing skills and willingness to wage war should make Saturday night a lot of fun.
There has been a spate of upsets recently in boxing and Arce would like to continue that trend. Darchinyan, who is favored, created one of those upset in his last match when be beat Christian Mijares—a man who has previously beaten Arce. Upsets are good in all sports, but especially in boxing where there is the often mistaken perception by the media and some fans that the favorites always win. In fact, over the last four or five years boxing has produced many shockers.
