Who Is the Greatest?

Boxing fans have been debating who is the best pound for pound fighter of all time for….well, forever. OK, not forever, but probably since the sport was created. Boxing is one of the few sports where that debate is somewhat realistic. Except for the heavyweight division the fighters today are all still the same size as they always were, use pretty much the same equipment and fight under the same rules. So, fantasizing about Sugar Ray Robinson fighting Marvin Hagler as a middleweight is pretty much the same as remembering Sugar Ray fighting Carmen Basilio.

Now, for the first time, fans around the world will get to weigh in on this by voting for the best pound for pound fighter and the best ion each weight division. It’s the vote for the Greatest Ever Boxer. I was on the panel that selected the nominees in each of the original eight weight classes. Those nominees are displayed at thegreatestever.com. website . Fans around the world are now voting, and already hundreds of thousands of votes have been cast.

The final decisions will be announced at an awards dinner on Oct. 4 at the Paris Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. I will be hosting that banquet and it should be an exciting night. Just trying to figure out the nominees was almost an impossible task. Now the fans are trying to0 figure out who to vote for in each division and for overall best pound for pound. My pick is Sugar Ray Robinson, who I believe to be the best boxer who ever lived. We’ll see if the world agrees with me.
