I admit it now. I was on steroids when I was growing up in Brooklyn. I had my cousin get them for me after he finished his accordion lessons. He didn't inject them in my rear end; he buried them in a piece of Halvah from Merlin's candy store on Church Avenue. No one knew then and they must be shocked now. I can hear the words of Bones Ryan: "I knew it, how else could he hit a punch ball two sewers?” Only if you're from Brooklyn could you understand the accomplishment. I was young, naive and stupid. I was willing to try anything that would put me in the same company as Bobby Cousins, who could hit two sewers without help. Yes, I was young and stupid. Actually, my friends knew I was stupid and young, they just didn't know what naive was then, and maybe now they do. So after all these years I am coming clean.

Okay, I'm lying. I never did drugs or steroids or anything like that, I'm just trying to get into the Alex Rodriquez discussion with an attention grabber. There are some truths, though. I do have a Cousin Artie, who's not from the Dominican and he did take accordion lessons; and there was a candy store in our Flatbush neighborhood called Merlin’s. I confess to being addicted to Chocolate malteds and long thin pretzels, and there were guys named Bones Ryan and Bobby Cousins in my neighborhood.

Now to the farce that has become Alex Rodriquez. I have always been a fan of A-Rod. Now, to me, he is just a punch-line for late-night TV. His press conference was ridiculous from the beginning - no follow-up questions, teammates there supporting him and a PR firm raising money for charity. Young, naive and stupid? Sounds like Dean Wormer in Animal House - "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life". He came clean? Are you kidding me? Bill Clinton came clean. Marion Jones came clean. Pete Rose finally came clean. A-Fraud didn't come clean, he just continued to perpetrate his lie. From this day forward, Rodriquez will put up numbers in a numbers-oriented business and they won't mean anything. He never said, "I needed the edge because I don't have confidence in my own God-given ability". He's going to get a real going-over from the Yankee Stadium faithful and his road trips will be a nightmare. Room service will be a daily routine because what teammate is going out with him for a bite? Maybe he should call Bud Selig since he's also delusional? But that's subject for another blog.
